General Definition of Yoga and Introduction.
This is a simple definition of yoga, simplified only because a full definition including detailed information on the different types of yoga and would take a long time to explain and even longer to fully understand.
The word “yoga” is believed to come from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means “to join” or “to yoke”. It can also be translated into the word “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. What is commonly referred to as “yoga” can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.
The postures or poses practiced in yoga are designed to stretch and strengthen both large and small muscle groups in order to increase flexibility, mobility, stamina, balance and strength. Most types of Yoga are practiced in slow and gentle movements and is the preferred exercise by a growing number of people in the world because of the benefits for health and over all well-being.
Is Yoga a Religion?
There are still a lot of misconceptions about Yoga, for instance, Yoga being a religion, it is not a religion. It is more of a set of techniques for us to find spirituality and life balance. In fact, Yoga is being practiced by a lot of people from different religions like Christians, Jewish, Buddhists, and Muslims.
Yoga is not a type of religion but it is a practical aid. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. This enables an individual to attain a more balanced life and benefits include being more centered, have a clearer thought process and improved physical health. The continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being, and also a feeling of being at one with your environment.

The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible, it also improves the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. When practiced correctly and regularly Yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind. In the practice of Yoga the ultimate aim is one of self-development and self-realization.

The definition of yoga needs to include some of the benefits so we can understand it’s meaning. The benefits of yoga are far reaching but it can only be effective when you apply the right attitude to your practice of this ancient form of exercise. A calm and positive mindset is essential. Think of practicing yoga as the means and tools to realign and re-balance your vehicle (body) on a regular basis.
You can virtually take control and increase awareness of the body’s functioning systems. When you have mastered the basics of yoga you can then become your body’s mechanic, being more in-tune to any minor imbalances and you will be able to rectify these imbalances to your benefit. Yoga is becoming more and more popular as people recognize how to manage their own body’s functioning systems instead of having to pay someone else to do it, such as medical professionals. When you practice it regularly your body will be finely tuned. You will find that the probability for injuries and illnesses will reduce dramatically because you have a much more attuned state of physical and mental well being.
