Private Yoga Lessons

Private Yoga Lessons can benefit you to improve your yoga practice by having one on one yoga instruction. Traditionally yoga was taught by one yoga instructor to one student. In modern times the groups of students have increased and in order to offer a price effective yoga instruction and classes typically have six or more students to each yoga instructor each lesson. I have heard of Yoga classes in major cities having 30 or more students.

Private Yoga Lessons can provide a space in which you can connect more with your own body, mind and spirit as well as getting individualized attention from your yoga instructor. Yoga poses and postures as well as breathing exercises can be designed especially to suit your individual needs. The benefits of learning yoga one on one is that you can progress further more quickly by practicing postures and the breathing exercises at your own pace.

Improve Yoga Practice at Home.

Students often want to practice their yoga more frequently than when there are classes available. Practicing at home is a useful and cost effective supplement to group classes at the studio. However a home practice consultation with your yoga instructor will be important to work on a plan for your practice at home. Your home yoga consultation should include discussion about your personal goals in yoga, how to make your practice consistent and a written practice plan so you know what will be best yoga practice at home.

Your yoga instructor will need to guide you through your yoga practice plan so that you feel confident to complete the plan on your own, at your own pace, in a safe and efficient way. Although home practice is beneficial, it is best to include home practice as part of your yoga practice and make an effort to attend yoga classes at least weekly. This way you are less likely to fall into bad habits and your yoga instructor can instruct you properly.

Group class students who have attended personalized coaching have reported that they have vastly improved their yoga practice in a short time. Yoga students often say that Private Yoga Lessons have helped deepen their yoga practice. Private coaching lessons will generally include feedback to you on how to properly perform yoga postures and poses. Adaptability is the key element and a good private yoga coach will be able to help you make corrections or adapt to meet the students individual goals and needs.

Some yoga students have special needs that can not be satisfied in a group class. Private yoga classes are a good option. Examples of yoga student who have special needs may include issues include stress management, high blood pressure, sports training, managing menopausal symptoms, arthritis, infertility, cancer recovery, Cerebral Palsy, and Multiple Sclerosis. Another great thing about private yoga lessons is that having personal attention from a yoga instructor can really help improve form and get maximum benefit out of a stretch. The body has a way of trying to avoid strong stretches, and with private yoga tuition, instructors should be able to identify when this happens.

They can also help spot those stretches where a less advanced version of a particular yoga pose is more appropriate and/or blocks/straps/mats might be required to start using a particular stretch.

    • Good point Tom. Private yoga lessons is sort of like the difference between going to a gym session or having a personal trainer. Your private yoga lessons will ensure you’re following technique correctly, which makes learning both quicker and more effective.

      Thanks for your comment Tom,
Well said and well explained. It is really beneficial to have a private lesson now and again, it helps your yoga instructor pick up on little inconsistencies and areas can be identified to make improvements in your yoga practice.

  2. Hi Bev,

i definately like the idea of having private yoga lessons for people with special needs as its not always possible for these people to drive to group lesson. Also it would be tailor made for their particular problem.

Thanks for your comment and sharing Jackie,
I agree, if someone had a back problem for example then Private Yoga Lessons could be planned and practiced to improve the core strength which in turn would support the back. This is just one small example of how a well planned yoga exercise program can compliment one area of the body by focusing on another. This type of specific yoga program would definitely be much more effective through the implementation of Private Yoga Lessons.

  3. I have come across a few other websites related to this subject in the past couple of days in doing a research report for my boss. I have to say that what you’re saying here makes perfect sense and is helping me to get my head around this subject. Do you have any other websites you could recommend to help my research?

    Thanks

I wonder if you can make any recommendations about same sex / opposite sex teacher / student. It seems to me that if someone is getting private exercise sessions then there are easily enforceable barriers but private yoga lessons seem to me to be far more intimate and that could lead to the possibility of challenges to professional conduct.

      Thanks Wal,
You make a valid point. I would probably feel more comfortable with a female yoga instructor for private yoga lessons but I think this is a matter for the individuals involved to decide. If you have been working with your yogi for a while and there is already a trust built between you then it should not matter whether they are male or female. However, in our litigious society, I have heard of instances of male yogi’s running semi private lessons with two or three female students to ensure protection for all parties. Food for thought!

  5. Yoga can be very challenging and after attending three or four large group sessions you will likely need some personalized instruction to improve your form and alignment.

  6. Hi Bev,
Having practiced some yoga at home myself, I often wonder if I am hold the correct postures. So I can definitely see the benefits of Private Yoga Lessons.

Personal attention to learn the correct techniques would certainly speed the learning process up too.

I’ve also wondered what it would be like to practice yoga by the sea on some flat rocks, by myself, first thing in the morning…you know what I mean…that looks so relaxing and good for you. ;-)

I must try it one day. :-)

    Hi Bev,

I know how a large class can be not only intimidating, but limiting too. I went with a friend to a Yoga class quite some years ago now, and by the end of the hour, the instructor had managed to get around to each student once! This didn’t satisfy me too much at all. Your advice re a private yoga group is perhaps a good way to meet two ideas in the middle.

  8. Yoga is very useful , simple & effective way to gain physical strength. Yoga is done to sharpen the mind .
