What is Prenatal Yoga?

Prenatal Yoga is a gentle form of yoga which takes into account the changing needs of a woman’s body while she is pregnant.  Yoga during pregnancy assists and strengthens the muscles and joints as they change with the influx of pregnancy hormones. Muscles and joints become more flexible during pregnancy but also more prone to injury.

Is Prenatal Yoga Right for You?

If you are an expectant mother then prenatal yoga is probably for right you. Many people argue that pregnant women should not  attempt any form of exercise however Prenatal Yoga can be the exception to the rule. Of course, if you are a beginner to yoga practice, before starting any form of new exercise you have not tried before it is important to check with your doctor whether your pregnant or not.

Those who have practiced Yoga prior to becoming pregnant need to discuss that fact that they have become pregnant with their yoga instructor or Yogi. Even if you haven’t shared your exciting news with anyone else yet, you would be irresponsible to yourself, your unborn child and your instructor by not informing them of your pregnancy. Certain types of Yoga and certain poses  (or postures) may place unnecessary strain or stress on your body, particularly your abdominal area and your back. Your Yoga instructor needs to be experienced in teaching yoga to pregnant women and if they are not they should be able to recommend a specialized Prenatal Yoga instructor.

Benefits of Yoga During Pregnancy.

Prenatal yoga keeps the core strong, assists you to maintain correct posture and can help relieve some of those pregnancy aches and pains. Many experts in Yoga agree prenatal yoga is the best exercise for expectant mothers as it also helps promote and develop good breathing habits, which can help immensely during childbirth.

What do I expect from Yoga During Pregnancy?

While attending a Prenatal Yoga class you should expect lots of breathing work. You should also experience a slower-paced workout than regular yoga and you will likely meet many like minded expectant mothers. When first starting a yoga class for pregnant women be aware of your own limitations, listen to your body, if you feel any discomfort or pain you must slow it down and take it easy.

Let your instructor know if you are having particular difficulty with any specific poses or stretches and they should be able to give suggestions on how to make the next session easier and better for you. Remember that your body is creating a miracle, and there are many internal changes going on so you will need to be calm and patient.
